Berlin Brandenburg Airport

Where is Berlin Brandenburg Airport? And when will it open?

BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport (IATA: BER, ICAO: EDDB) (German: Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt) is a new international airport under construction 18 km (11 mi) south of central Berlin, the capital city of Germany.

BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport had been scheduled to open in June 2012, however the opening of Berlin BER has been delayed to 2018, at the earliest. At that time, Berlin Brandenburg will become the new airport for the entire Berlin-Brandenburg region. This "new" airport is actually an expansion and transformation of the existing Berlin Schoenefeld Airport (SXF), located southeast of the German capital. Berlin's other existing airport, Tegel (TXL) will close about six months later. The city's third airport, Berlin Templehof (THF) closed in 2008.

When Berlin's new Brandenberg airport opens its doors, the capital city region will offer business travellers, tourists, and companies a high-tech airport with ideal connections, international flights, direct motorway access, and a rail station under the main terminal. It will take only 20 minutes for the BER airport train to travel the 20-kilometre stretch of track into the Berlin city centre. In addition to making air travel more attractive, Berlin BER Airport will improve life in the region. By closing Tegel and Tempelhof, hundreds of thousands of Berlin and Brandenburg residents will no longer have to live with aircraft noise.

Update: Berliners are petitioning to keep Tegel Airport open, and are getting widespread support.

Important: the opening of the new Berlin Brandenberg BER Airport has been delayed to 2018, at the earliest. The city's other two airports, Schoenefeld SXF and Templehof THF will continue to operate until that time, at the earliest.
