Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) Information

Where is Daocheng Yading Airport? The remote Yading Nature Reserve is abundant with forests, meadows, streams, gorges and waterfalls, and is home to monkeys, deer, pandas and leopards, to name a few. It is also a mountain sanctuary and ancient Tibetan pilgrimage site. The three peaks, seen as emanations of the Buddhist boddhisatvas Chenrezig, Jampayang and Chenadorje, were sanctified by the 5th Dali Lama. The highest peak, Chenrezig, is 6032 metres (19,790 feet) above sea level. Until Joseph Rock, the famed American botanist and explorer, shared his experiences in the July 1931 issue of National Geographic Magazine, the site had been relatively unknown. 

The first airport in the region is currently under construction and is due to open in May 2013.

Daocheng Yading Airport (IATA: DCY), is situated in Daocheng County in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, China. The airport site is in Sangdui Township, 130 kilometres (80 miles) from Yading. We anticipate the airport will also be referred to as Yading Airport, Daocheng Airport or even Sangdui Airport. 

With an elevation of 4,410 metres (14,469 feet), Daocheng Yading Airport is the world's highest airport, an honour previously held by Qamdo Bangda Airport (BPX). DCY's claim-to-fame will be shortlived, however, as another airport in the region, Nagwu Dagring Airport, will sit at 4,436 metres (14,554 feet) when it opens.

Daocheng Yading Airport's 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft) terminal building is shaped like a UFO.
