Rio de Janeiro Galeão International Airport

Where is Rio de Janeiro Galeão Airport?

Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's visited cities, famous for its carnival celebrations, samba, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and the giant mountaintop Christ the Redeemer statue that towers over the city.

The world's eyes are on Rio as it prepares to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Paralympics. In 2014, Rio hosts the FIFA World Cup.

Rio de Janeiro Galeão International Airport (IATA: GIG, ICAO: SBGL), officially Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (!), also referred to as Rio de Janeiro Galeão Airport, Rio Galeão Airport, Rio de Janeiro International Airport, Rio de Janeiro Airport, or simply Rio Airport, is located on an island, 20 kilometres (13 miles) from central Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. GIG Airport is shared with the military. (For the history behind the airport's double-barrelled name, see the Services page).

In 2013, Rio de Janeiro Galeão Airport served 17,115,368 passengers, and is Rio's main airport. The city's other airport, Rio de Janiero Santos Dumont Airport (SDU), located downtown, serves domestic traffic.

Rio de Janeiro Galeão Airport is a hub for Gol Transportes Aéreos and TAM Airlines. Other airlines that fly to GIG include Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aeroméxico, Air Canada, Air France, Alitalia, American Airlines, Avianca, Azul Brazilian Airlines, British Airways, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Iberia, KLM, LAN Airlines, Lufthansa, TAP Portugal, United Airlines and USA Airways.

Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, Atlanta, Bogotá, Brasília, Buenos Aires, Dallas, Dubai, Foz do Iguaçu, Frankfurt, Lima, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Mexico City, Miami, New York, Panama City, Paris, Porto, Puerto Iguazú, Rome, Santiago de Chile, Santo Domingo, São Paulo, Toronto and Washington DC.

As Rio's main airport is located on an island, transportation options are limited. Your best bet for a GIG Airport transfer is the bus. Details on all options are included in this guide.

Or, to truly arrive stress free, treat yourself to a private Rio de Janeiro Galeão Airport transfer from IHateTaxis.

Tip: Listen carefully to the airport announcements and you will hear the voice of Iris Lettieri. The popular radio and news announcer has been making the airport's announcements for 30 years. Stories abound of passengers missing their flights as they listened, enthralled, to her sensual voice - one she developed to calm nervous travelers.

The history behind the airport's two official names:

  • Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport is the airport's full official name
  • The first name of the airport is a reference to Praia do Galeão (Galleon Beach), located in front of the original passenger terminal (the present passenger terminal of the Brazilian Air Force) and where in 1663 the galleon Padre Eterno was built
  • The second name of the airport is in honour of Brazilian musician Antônio Carlos Jobim (Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim): Galeão Airport is explicitly mentioned in his composition "Samba do avião"
