Official Phuket Airport Taxi Recommendations

IHateTaxis.com has a mixed recommendation on the official Phuket Airport taxi service.

For an official Phuket Airport taxi, walk out of the Arrivals Hall and head straight back through the parking lot about 50 metres. You'll see the metered Phuket Airport taxi stand off to the left side - with a big sign and it is difficult to miss it.  They will charge you a THB 100 "airport tax" that is a legitimate fee. Transportation to everywhere on the island will be cheaper with these taxis.

** Be aware that unofficial or pirate taxis operate at Phuket Airport and we have given them different safety recommendations as discussed below.

The Phuket Airport is one of the few places you can pick up a legitimate metered Phuket Airport taxi where you can be sure not to get ripped off. Beware that the "Phuket Airport taxi mafia" have made it difficult for the unsuspecting visitor to even find this option.

Expect to be approached by touts immediately when exiting the airport - ignore them.

Look for the legitimate Taxi from Phuket Airport stand outside is to the right of the main building (about 50 metres outside) and the taxis are red and yellow and is very well marked! There is a THB 100 fee for using these Phuket Airport transfers, but this fee will be cheaper than a pirate taxi.

Phuket taxi drivers will probably insist that the meters are broken to try to gain a higher fixed price. Insist on the meter or know the average prices to where you are going. Prices should be per car, not per person.

Update as of November 13, 2013: soon metered taxis will be the only type of taxi permitted to pick-up passengers at Phuket Airport. These new restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2013.

 Pirate Phuket Airport Taxi Serivce

Avoid the touts that approach you asking "where are you going" and the like as they are there to rip you off.  Stick with the official taxi from Phuket Airport services. The good news is that there are changes coming that will restrict unlicensed taxis from operating at the airport; soon, only metered taxis will be permitted to pick-up passengers.

In May 2013, a disturbing incident took place at Phuket Airport. A female Chinese tourist got into an unofficial taxt at the airport and was sexually assaulted. The driver of an unlicenced taxi told the passenger that the back seat was broken, so she got in the front seat. The driver then locked the doors and began to assault the woman while he was driving (he was found to be on drugs). They drove around for 5 hours until the car ran out of gas, upon which the driver got out of the cab, and the woman was able to escape (read more). While obviously a one-off incident, the risk of this happening in an official taxi is nil, or next to none.

IHateTaxis.com does not recommend the pirate Phuket Airport taxi service.

We can't caution you enough to avoid unofficial and pirate taxis in Phuket!

 Phuket Airport Taxi Scams

As mentioned above, Phuket Airport taxi drivers will try to establish a fixed price, which will not be in your best interest.
