Port of Foynes Terminal Info & Guide

Where is Port of Foynes Terminal?

Foynes is a village and port in County Limerick, in midwest Ireland, situated on the southern bank of the Shannon Estuary, where the River Shannon flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Foynes is rumoured to be the place where Irish Coffee was invented.

Foynes played a key role in facilitating air traffic between Europe and the United States during the 1930's and 1940's when seaplanes used it as refuelling stop. Today, the nearest airport is Shannon Airport (SNN), located in a satellite town not far from the city of Limerick, at the head of the estuary.

The Port of Foynes is operated by the Shannon Foynes Port Company, the port authority for the entire estuary. Among the many marine operations, is the cruise port in Foynes.

The village of Foynes is a short walk from where the cruise ships berth.

Coach access and parking facilities are available on the quay. The nearest car rentals are in Limerick.

Suggestions while you are in port in this pretty little town:

- The Foynes Flying Boat Museum boasts the only full scale Boeing B314 Flying Boat. The museum includes a flight simulator that gives an insight into the age of flying boats, a 1940's style cinema and an aviation sculpture park.

- Listowel, a short coach trip away, is a typical Irish market town with a variety of eating and shopping experiences.

- The majority of visitors head to Limerick.
