Explore Alberobello with a local guide and leave the beaten path by visiting also the less commercialized and therefore non-touristic side of the old town. Alberobello, UNESCO World Heritage site and so called 'capital of the trulli-houses', features a concentration of more than 1400 of Apulia's typical trulli on the two hills “Aia piccola” and “Rione monti”. This rural and unique architecture of cone-shaped dwellings is found in the entire Apulian region, usually scattered between endless olive groves and low-set vineyards. Discover why this stunning, mortar-less architecture was so popular in the past and how the trulli were build. After a nice walk through this fairy-tale town you will have some time to mingle with the locals in one of the numerous coffee or wine bars, visit the weekly market or to explore typical handmade fabrics and artisan crafts in some of the shops in the historical district.

We explore the green heart of Puglia, seeing the gently rolling hills covered with vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees and the spontaneous vegetation known as Macchia Mediterranea in the outskirts of Alberobello. In this area, predominantly featuring oak trees, lies one of the access points to Europe's longest Aqueduct, the Acquedotto Pugliese, developing for 244km. Recently refurbished, the pathway built on top allows us literally to walk over the water. After approximately 2 hours we reach the tiny village Cocolicchio, were a nice local couple invites us into their home, a real and inhabited Trullo. How to end this excursion better than with some refreshments of homemade local food? Enjoy the delicious snack of Focaccia, Friselline with vegetable toppings, Taralli, fresh made Mozzarella or cheese, some raw vegetables, pickles, omelet, water and local wine all made with “amore” by our hosts.
