Even with official taxis, challenges have been reported with the "free" taxi price setting (e.g. if the driver senses an insecure passenger, he may switch on the meter instead if using the fixed price (although new taxi regulations which come into effect on January 1, 2015 may help minimize theispractice). If you are a confident and seasoned traveller, you may be just fine. But for most everyone else, there are other convenient, inexpensive and less confusing Stockholm Arlanda Airport transportation options avialable.

  • Free price setting applies to taxi rides in Sweden since the taxi market is deregulated. This means that any taxi company can set the taxi meter to any level they like, as long as there is a price list posted on a side window. This is perfectly legal in Sweden. It is recommended that you:

     

    • Always ask if the taxi company applies fixed prices
    • If you have received a fixed price, it should be entered and visible in the taxi meter before your journey starts.

     

    The large Stockholm taxi companies have fixed prices for the trip to and from Arlanda Airport, varying between SEK 450-500. Always confirm with the driver before the trip.

     

    Typical fares to take a taxi from Arlanda Airport are about:

    Stockholm city centre SEK 450-500 - approximate travel time is 35-40 minutes
    Uppsala SEK 425-475 - approximate travel time is 25-35 minutes

     

    Meter prices vary widely depending on the time of day, however it should not cost more than SEK 300 to travel 10 kilometres.

     

    UPDATE: New taxi regulations were announced in November 2014:

    As of January 1st 2015, Sockholm Arlanda Airport taxi companies are required to advise customers, in advance, if the taxi fare is likely to exceed SEK 500. The new regulation requires taxi drivers to reveal the highest possible journey fare - AND make a record of the agreement between them and their passengers.

While travelling in Stockholm and around town by taxi is easy and convenient, the way taxis are organized at Stockholm Arlanda Airport is rather confusing. The system is so baffling to the uninitiated that many confused passengers end up taking an unoffical or pirate Arlanda Airport taxi unintentionally - and get ripped off.

 

There are 3 Arlanda Airport taxi lines in operation at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport International Arrivals:


  • One line is for reputable companies which pay a fee to the airport; these "official" Arlanda Airport taxi companies have a maximum fee they can charge to Stockholm and, for the most part, will not rip you off. To identify the offiicial taxi line, look first for the signs (look up,as the signs are 3-4 meters up in the air!). There are also people hired by the ARN Airport to assist, but they are unobtrusive and you may have to seek them out.
  • The other two lines are open for all other taxis to try to pick up passengers. These lines are easier to identify, as touts and drivers are usually quite aggressive in their efforts.

 

You are free to choose the company that best suits you; you do not need to take the car that is first in line. Note that licensed Arlanda Airport taxis with taximeters always have yellow number signs.

Unoffical taxis in the "other" pick up lines at Stockholm Arlanda Airport may try to rip you off by overcharging or skimming your credit card.

Please be aware that there are companies trying to impersonate Taxi Stockholm by using the company name, Taxi Stockholm, on their vehicles. Make sure you use the real one.  Also the price on the meter is in the local currency, the Kronor, not Euro, not US Dollars, or anything else.  Many tourists have been told that the meter price is in Euros, thus paying a lot more than the Kronor price.

If returning to the Stockholm Arlanda Airport by taxi, let your hotel order the taxi and they will check the fixed price in advance.
