ASM Asmara Airport Info & Guide

Asmara International Airport

Where is Asmara Airport?

Situated in the Horn of Africa, the northeast of Eritrea sits on the Red Sea coast, directly across from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. To the west is Sudan, to the south is Ethiopia, and to the southwest is Djibouti.

The origins of Asmara, the capital city, reach back to 800 BC. Today, Asmara is known for its well-preserved colonial Italian modern architecture.

Asmara International Airport (IATA: ASM, ICAO: HHAS), formerly Yohannes IV International Airport or Yohannes IV Airport, referred to as simply Asmara Airport, is located in Asmara, in the central Maekel Region, Eritrea.

ASM Airport serves less than 150,000 passengers a year. With a short runway and a high altitude, Asmara Airport has severe capacity restrictions. Larger aircraft fly into Massawa International Airport (MSW), on the Eritrean coast.

Currently the Eritrean government ,in collaboration with the Pakistani government, is constructing a multi-million-dollar terminal, thanks to money from a new gold mine. The airport underwent substantial renovation in early 2011, and the new Eritrean Airlines are currently flying there. The government of Eritrea is currently repaving and refurbishing the roads of Asmara International.

Airlines that fly to Asmara Airport include EgyptAir, Eritrean Airlines, Kenyatta, Lufthansa, Nasair, Sudan Airways and Yemenia. Destinations Cities with flights to Asmara Airport include Cairo, Cape Town, Dubai, Entebbe, Frankfurt, Jeddah, Johannesburg, Juba, Karachi, Kassala, Khartoum, Lagos, Lahore, Massawa, Nairobi, Port Sudan, Rome and Sana'a.
