Athens Driving Stress Level: 9/10

Driving in Athens is chaos. Remember how ancient the city is, as it was never designed for cars, let alone heavy traffic. The roads around the city do not follow any logical pattern and traffic congestion at any time of the day is common. Many streets are not signposted and, well, they are in Greek! Parking is extremely hard to find as well. Greek drivers are erratic, to say the least, and motorbikes manage to squeeze through the smallest spaces imaginable, often at high speed. If you need to change lanes, local drivers in Athens are reluctant to give way and road manners are virtually unheard of.

If you want to drive, stay away from the city centre, otherwise you'll find yourself frustrated and, possibly, stuck. Is that any way to spend a vacation? The heart of Athens is very walkable anyways.

On the other hand, if you hire a car at Athens Airport, you will find it extremely useful to explore the area outside of the city. Close to Athens, highlights include Corinth and Nafplio to the west.

Athens Airport Car Rental Recommendations

IHateTaxis.com does not recommend a Athens Airport car rental.

If we haven't scared you yet, let's be clear: an Athens Airport car rental is not recommended for driving in the city of Athens! Only consider an Athens Airport car hire if you wish to explore Greece outside of Athens.
