HHN Frankfurt Hahn Airport Info & Guide

Frankfurt Hahn Airport

Where is Frankfurt Hahn Airport?

The village of Hahn sits upon a ridge facing the Moselle River, on the watershed between the Nahe and the Moselle Rivers. Hahn is also on the "Hunsrückhöhenstraße" (Hunsrück Heights Road), a scenic road across the Hunsrück mountain range, built originally as a military road.

While many pass through Hahn simply to transit its' airport, there is actually some interesting history here. In and around Hahn there are traces of Roman and Frankish settlements, and interesting architecture.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport (IATA: HHN, ICAO: EDFH) is about 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from the town of Kirchberg, located in the Rhein-Hunsrück district of Rhineland-Palatinate, in west central Germany. The airport actually gets its name from the tiny village of Hahn, 2 kilometres away, and the Hahn Air Base that occupied the space previously (they still maintain a small operation here).

Despite its name, HHN Airport is not in Frankfurt, which can be confusing to travellers expecting to travel to, or connect with, Frankfurt Main Airport (FRA). Frankfurt Hahn Airport is roughly half-way between Frankfurt and Luxembourg (each about 120 kilometres / 75 miles away by road).

In 2015, Frankfurt Hahn Airport served 2,665,105 passengers.

Airlines serving Frankfurt Hahn Airport include Lauda Air, Ryanair (primary airline), SunExpress and Wizz Air.

Destinations served include Alicante, Bergamo, Bologna, Budapest, Dublin, Féz, Girona, Gran Canaria, Izmir, Katowice, Lanzarote, London, Málaga, Manchester, Marrakech, Montpellier, Palma de Mallorca, Pisa, Porto, Riga, Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Sofia, Stockholm, Tenerife-South, Valencia and Warsaw, to truly mention just a few.

Seasonal service is provided to Ibiza, Kos, Osijek, Paphos, Rhodes, Santander, Thessaloniki and Zadar, among others. New destinations to be served soon include Plovdiv, Rijeka, Tanger and Târgu MureČ™.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport was named #7 on the list of the World's Worst Airports 2014 by Sleeping in Airports. Check out our blog post, Layover Ideas for the World's Worst Airports, for inspiration if you get stuck here.
