Things To Do in Saint Helier & Jersey Airport Layover Ideas
Things to do in Saint Helier if you have a Jersey Airport Layover or Extended Jersey Airport Stopover
Jersey War Tunnels
Formerly known as the German Underground Hospital, the Jersey War Tunnels were built during the Second World War, and now is an interesting tourist attraction. Cut deeply into rising hills, the site is now a museum telling the story of Jersey, which, along with the other Channel Islands, was the only part of Britain to be occupied by Germany during the war.
Mont Orgueil Castle
Mont Orgueil is a castle in Jersey, overlooking the harbour of Gorey. It is also called Gorey Castle, or lé Vièr Châté (the Old Castle). The site had been fortified in the prehistoric period, but the construction of the castle was undertaken following the division of the Duchy of Normandy in 1204. The castle was first mentioned in 1212. During the Second World War German Occupation (1940–1945) the occupying forces garrisoned the castle and added modern fortifications camouflaged to blend in with existing structures. Restoration work opened up previously inaccessible areas of the castle to the public when it reopened in 2006. Newly built additions in modern style have enclosed sections of the castle and made them weatherproof, parts of the structure have been reinterpreted, and artistic interventions in the grounds and structure of the castle have provided attractions for visitors.
La Cotte de St Brelade
La Cotte de St Brelade is a Palaeolithic site inhabited before rising sea levels transformed Jersey into an island. Jersey was a centre of Neolithic activity, as demonstrated by the concentration of dolmens. Evidence of Bronze Age and early Iron Age settlements can be found in many locations around the island. In June 2012 it was announced that two metal detectorists had uncovered in Grouville what could be Europe's largest hoard of Iron Age coins, which may be worth up to GBP 10 M, after a search spanning 30 years. It was reported that the hoard weighed about three quarters of a tonne and could contain up to 50,000 Roman and Celtic coins. In October 2012, a new discovery of a Bronze Age axe hoard was made.
