Kuusamo is in the Northern Ostrobothnia region of Oulu province, which is directly adjacent to Lapland, the largest and northernmost of the regions of Finland. The area is referred to as Finnish Lapland.

The Kuusamo Airport is located 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) northeast from Kuusamo town centre. It is also the closest airport to Ruka, the popular ski centre and key attraction in the area (27 kilometres away).

Kuusamo Airport served 91,759 passengers in 2011, with flights from Finnair, Flybe Nordic and Blue1. Virtually all flights operate to/from Helsinki.

Kuusamo Airport selected as Airport of the Year for 2012 by Finavia, a company operating 25 airports in Finland. KAO  previously won the award in 1993.
