Sights near Larnaca

All of the main attractions are just minutes from the Larnaca Airport and include more than 25 kilometres / 16 miles of sandy beaches. The most popular beaches including Dasoudi, Dhekelia, Geroskipou, McKenzie and Phinikoudes. Larnaca has a long and interesting history and visitors can still view some remnants of its colourful past including the Church of St. Lazarus and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque.

Larnaca Salt Lake

Larnaca Salt Lake fills with water during the winter months and is visited by flocks of flamingoes. These glorious birds generally stay from November until the end of March. The lake dries up in the summer. While it once yielded a good quality of salt, scraped from the dried surface, salt from the lake is now considered unfit for human consumption. Larnaca Salt Lake is locared near the Larnaca Airport.

Underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni

The underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni is a rock cavern, with two chambers. The structure of the chapel suggests that it once was a pagan tomb, and dating back possibly to Phoenician times. Ayia Phaneromeni is credited with various magical properties: if you visit, you may see people (those who suffer from headaches or other diseases) walk three times round it and leave pieces of clothing or tufts of their hair on the grill in front of the south window. The chapel is located roughly halfway between Larnaca Salt Lake and the monument of Zeno.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the Larnaca Airport in time for your connection and enjoy your layover city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
