NCL Newcastle Airport is an extremely accessible airport with a major arterial road, the A1, passing right through the city centre to the airport. This means that either hiring a car or catching public transport into the city are feasible options while you are on a layover at this airport.

Leazes Park

Opened in 1873 Leazes Park was Newcastle’s first park open to the public. Lottery funding provided the opportunity for it to be brought back to its heyday glory and it now offers an oasis near the centre of a bustling city. You can enjoy the views over the Town Moor or wander through the breathtaking architecture of Leazes Terrace and the St James’s Park Stadium. You can pack a picnic to savour on the open grassy areas, or feed the ducks on the large lake. If you are looking to stretch your legs after hours of travel, Leazes Park offers beautiful walking trails through the woodlands.

The Castle

This archaeological site from which the city of Newcastle got its name, dates back to Roman times and is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in the history of England. There are two main buildings on the site to have a look at, the Castle Keep, a fortified stone tower, and The Black Gate, a fortified gatehouse. If you want to experience some real English history and even walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror across floors laid in the 1100s by King Henry II, The Castle is the place to go. Beware of the ghosts though, this castle is thought to be haunted.

City of Newcastle Golf Club

For all those golfing enthusiasts out there, this course has been played since 1891 when the club was founded and, being only 8km from the airport, is one to add to your list. The clubhouse offers bar, lounge and restaurant facilities and panoramic views of the 1st and 18th holes, for those who worked up an appetite out on the course.

Northumberland Street

This paved shopping street offers a retail therapy at its best. From huge department stores catering for both men and women’s designer needs, to budget clothes specialists and music stores, this it the place to go if shopping is your preferred layover activity. One of the largest Marks and Spencer’s in England is located in Northumberland Street which also offers an enormous food court at which to satisfy any hunger you develop with all the shopping you will have to do.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to NCL Newcastle Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
