Nicosia Airport (NIC) Information

Where is Nicosia Airport?  

Nicosia is the capital and largest city in Cyprus. The southern and northern sections of the city are divided by a Green Line.

Nicosia International Airport (NIC) is a largely disused airport located west of Nicosia city, in the Lakatamia suburb. Nicosa Airport was originally the main airport for the island of Cyprus, but commercial flights ceased after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus is headquartered here, but to the travelling public, the airport should be considered closed.

Since the closure of Nicosia Airport, three new airports have been opened on Cyprus.

Larnaca International Airport (LCA)  and Paphos International Airport (PFO) have opened in the Republic of Cypress, and serve all non-Turkish traffic on the island. Larnaca is the busiest.

Ercan International Airport (ECN) was opened in Northerm Cyprus, which, despite its name, can only handle flights that touch down in Turkey before/after visiting ECN. 

While there have been discussions about reopening Nicosia Airport as a goodwill gesture, under United Nations (UN) control, but so far neither the Greek nor the Turkish Cypriots have seriously pursued the option.
