Things To Do in Oakland & Oakland Airport Layover Ideas
Things to do in Oakland if you have a Oakland Airport Layover or Extended Oakland Airport Stopover
Jack London Square
Jack London Square is Oakland's principal tourist destination, and is named after the writer and city's favorite son. The area was the original wharf district of Oakland and retains some of its maritime feel. Popular for shopping and restaurants.
USS Potomac
The USS Potomac (tied up on Water St, next to Jack London Square) is open for dockside tours several afternoons a week. Historic cruises on the bay are available during the spring/aummer/fall a few evenings a week (book ahead). Originally built as a Coast Guard Cutter, the famous Potomac was remodeled in 1936 and turned into Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidential yacht. The ship served in that role until his death in 1945. In 1941, a fishing trip on the Potomac served as a cover story for Roosevelt's secret meeting with Churchill; this meeting led to the WWII allied partnership, and the eventual formation of the United Nations.
