It is sometimes referred to as WRWA Airport, including by the local airport authority, however this is not an official airport code. The airport is named to honor legendary cowboy and comedian Will Rogers, an Oklahoma native, who died in an airplane crash in the area.

In 2014, Oklahoma City Airport served 3.83 million passengers, making it Oklahoma's busiest. The city's other airport, Wiley Post Airport (PWA), is a general aviation, corporate and reliever airport.
