Enjoy the park

Kelowna's Downtown City Park offers a great environment on the shores of Okanagan Lake. In the summer, suntan, swim, play and relax in the park, at the family playgrounds or at the skateboard park. Or rent various craft to explore the waters. Year round, the park is a great place to walk or jog. A great spot to visit if you have a short layover. Look for the big blue bear sculpture, a now-famous public art piece.

Play with the Ogopogo

Enjoy the half submerged playground at Gyro Beach; in summer you can let yourself slide along the rope into Okanagan Lake. You might come across the lake's resident, the Ogopogo. We are not joking, Loch Ness isn't the only body of water with a lake monster [the term monster is used loosely!). If you see Ogopogo make sure to be friendly as it is his home you're swimming in!

Make a Spash at the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre

The H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre is the largest municipally owned water park in Canada and features an Olympic length 50 meter pool, wave pool, river run, 3 water slides, children’s water play area, and an ocean wave surf simulator. And, for the fitness enthusiast, a 12,000 square foot cardio and weight equipment and exercise space awaits you. Great for a short layover or a whole day of fun.

Tour a Winery

Mission Hill Winery, Quail's Gate Winery and Summerhill Winery are all nearby, and all welcome visitors. Learn about winemaking, sample the wares, and enjoy the best of the Okanagan!

Tip: this layover is best enjoyed on a tour, or with a car and a friend who is willing to be your designated driver!

Walk or Bike the Kettle Valley Railway Trestles

Recently rebuilt after being burnt down, the Kettle Valley Railway Trestles provide a unique and beautiful view of the Kelowna area, as well as the uninhabited areas surrounding it. The trestles are about an hour's drive outside of Kelowna - up a dirt road - in the Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park. Features of the park include the Myra Canyon (or KLO Creek Canyon), Bellevue Creek corridor and the Kettle Valley Trestles (Myra Canyon Trestles, Bellevue Trestles).

There are half a dozen public access golf courses within a short drive of central Kelowna. If the weather is fair, why get some fresh air and exercise while enjoying a round of golf?

Go skiing

If you are visiting in winter, and have a lengthy layover, why not go skiing? Big White, Silver Star and Apex ski resorts are all nearby and offer some of Canada's best skiing.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the Kelowna Airport in time for your connection and enjoy your layover city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
