Where is Rankin Inlet Airport?  

Rankin Inlet, or Kangiqtiniq (“deep bay/inlet” in Inuktitut), is the second largest community in Nanavut, Canada's northernmost territory. Rankin Inlet is a key government, transportation, and communications hub for the people of this unique area of Canada, located on the west coast of Hudson Bay. Exceptionally rewarding to explore, but hardly easy to get around, the landscapes of this area are full of expansive ice fields and flower-filled tundra, yet the access is primarily via air since the entire region has just 21 kilometres (13.5 miles) of highway.

Rankin Inlet Airport (IATA: YRT, ICAO: CYRT) is operated by the government of Nunavut, and has grown beyond its capacity. 

On November 9, 2011 significant investments of CAD 27 million were announced for Rankin Inlet Airport which will ensure the critical transportation gateway continues to serve the Kivalliq region of Nunavut and the 55,000 passengers who rely on its services annually.

The initiatives include upgrades to the airport runway, installation of electrical systems and a new taxiway, as well as expanded restrooms and a new public waiting room.

As of September 2012, construction has begun on the 1st phase of the project, expanding the airport's apron. The oerall project is expected to take about 2 years.
