Lubeck Blankensee Airport

Where is Lubeck Blankensee Airport?

Once named one of the five "Glories of the Empire", a title shared with Venice, Rome, Pisa and Florence, Lübeck is a largely intact medieval city in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state of Germany. The moniker was bestowed by Emperor Charles IV in 1375. Despite bombing in World War II, the city centre still has its medieval skyline and is surrounded by parts of the old city walls with two of the original city gates still standing. Today Lübeck is the largest German port city on the Baltic Sea and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lübeck Blankensee Airport (IATA: LBC, ICAO: EDHL) is located 8 kilometres (5.0 miles) south of Lübeck city centre and serves the greater Hamburg metropolitan area, the second largest airport to do so after Hamburg Airport (HAM). Marketed by some airlines as Hamburg Lübeck Airport, it is just 54 kilometres (34 miles) northeast of Hamburg, and is just an hour away by train.

LBC acts as Hamburg's airport for low cost carriers: Ryanair, Wizz Air and Globalis all fly from here. Destinations include Stockholm, Gdansk, Kiev, Budapest, Pisa, Barcelona, Milan and Palma de Mallorca.

There are lots of good Lübeck Airport transfer choices. We suggest the bus if you are going into Lübeck, the shuttle if you are going to Hamburg, or the train for either. Details on all Lübeck Airport transportation options in this guide

Tip: if you find yourself flying through Lübeck, pick up some marzipan. Local legend says it was invented when the city stores were down to just sugar and almonds, though others believe it was invented in Persia a few hundred years earlier.
