Castle of São Jorge

Castelo de São Jorge is one of Lisbon's most historical sites. Occupying a commanding position in the historic centre of the city, and overlooking the Tagus River, this Moorish castle offers incredible views.

See Sintra

Sintra's Royal Palace was used by Portugal's royalty for generations, until the 1910 revolution. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sintra is 28 kilometres from Lisbon, but well worth the trek.

Belém

Back in Portugal's Golden Age, when the country's explorers ruled the seas, it was from Belém that they embarked on their voyages. . Today you can visit the many monuments here, including Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, along with museums, gardens and parks. 6 kilometres west of the city centre, at the mouth of the Tagus River.

Visit Fatima. Or Christo Rei. Or Both.

There are two important religious sites nearby:

  • Our Lady of Fátima is the name given to the Virgin Mary as she reportedly appeared in 1917 in apparitions to three shepherd children. 123 kilometres north of Lisbon).
  • Described as similar to the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro, the Chriso Rei statue stands 100+ meters tall, across from downtown Lisbon, on the opposite bank of the Tejo River. There are breathtaking views from the top of the statue, but it will cost you EUR 5 to take the elevator up.09:00-18:00. Take the ferry to Cacilhas from Cais do Sodre, then bus 101.

Experience Fado Music

A must-do in Lisbon is to hear some fado music. The best way is to have dinner at a restaurant that features traditional fado music. You will pay more in these places, but you're paying for this very special music experience.

Ride Tram 28

Just three of Lisbon's traditional tram lines still operate in Lisbon, and the best to ride is Tram 28. Winding through the "Old Town", Tram 28 takes you by the most famous of Lisbon's sites. The hilly is noisy and crowded, but offers amazing glimpses of Lisboa. You can walk from downtown through the old Alfama neighborhood, or take bus 37 (watch out for pickpockets).

Take a Funicular

Funiculars offer a great way to get up high for fantastic views. Lisbon has four (all are National Monuments):

  • Gloria Funicular (Praça dos Restauradores - Bairro Alto): the second oldest, Lisbon's most visited funicular
  • Bica Funicular (Rua de São Paulo / Rua Duarte Belo - Largo de Calhariz): the route is most typical of the city
  • Lavra Funicular (Largo da Anunciada - Travessa Forno Torel): the oldest of Lisbon's funiculars
  • Santa Justa Elevator (Rua Aurea & Rua de Santa Justa): located downtown and connects to Trinidade, designed by a follower of Gustav Eiffel

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the Lisbon Airport in time for your connection and enjoy your layover city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
