Sydney International Airport

Where is Sydney Airport?

Boasting the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Sydney is one of the world's greatest cities.

Brimming with nature, history, art, culture, fashion, design and cuisine, Sydney is set next to miles of ocean coastline. Among its many sandy surf beaches, Bondi Beach and Manly Beach are world famous.

Sydney International Airport (IATA: SYD, ICAO: YSSY, ASX: SYD), officially Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport or Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, or simply Sydney Airport, is located in the suburbs of Arncliffe and Mascot in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. SYD is the sole airport serving Sydney.

In 2012, Sydney Airport served 36,920,000 passengers, making it the busiest airport in Australia, and one of the busiest in the world.

SYD Airport is a primary hub for Qantas, as well as a secondary hub for Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia.

Other airlines that fly to SYD include Aerolíneas Argentinas, AirAsia, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, Air Vanuatu, Asiana Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, LAN Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International, Tiger Airways, United Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.

The top international destinations served by Sydney Airport are Abu Dhabi, Auckland, Christchurch, Dubai, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Kuala Lumpur, London, Los Angeles, Nadi (Fiji), Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Thailand and Tokyo. There are also flights to Manila, New York, San Francisco, Taipei, Toronto and Vancouver, and many more.

The busiest domestic routes from SYD are Adelaide, Albury, Ballina, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sunshine Coast.

Other Items of Interest at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport has three passenger terminals. Terminal 1 is the International Terminal, while Terminals 2 and 3 are Domestic Terminals (T3 is dedicated to Quantas). The International Terminal is separated from the other two by a runway, therefore connecting passengers need to allow for longer transfer times (as high as 1 hour and 15 minutes). An intra-terminal Sydney Airport shuttle service runs between the terminals at a cost of AUD 5.50.

Sydney Airport services include:

  • SYD iPhone app
  • Medical Centre - Terminal 1, level 3
  • Pharmacy - Terminals 1 and 2
  • Post office - Terminal 1
  • Sydney Airport COMPANION magazine - Issue 1, Issue 2, Issue 3, Issue 4
  • StudioT2 - brands include: technology (Sony, Apple, Bose, Canon, Nikon); fragrances (Chloe, Dior, DKNY); cosmetics (MAC, OPI, Clarins); sunglasses (Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Prada, Gucci)

You are well advised to watch your money at SYD Airport: In 2010, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released a report sharply critical of price gouging at Sydney Airport, ranking it fifth out of five airports in the country.
