Sydney Airport Taxi

Sydney Airport taxi photo

Sydney Airport taxi services are readily available outside each of the Sydney Airport's terminal buildings, in the Sydney Airport taxi rank areas. A taxi from Sydney Airport provides a convenient and easy way to travel into nearby Sydney city and other destinations. The journey with a Sydney Airport taxi into central Sydney will take around 25 minutes, depending on traffic. All taxis in Sydney are entitled to work the SYD Sydney International Airport or anywhere else in the metropolitan area.

A taxi from Sydney Airport meter starts at a basic fare, but additional charges are usually made for luggage, late-night driving and travel on public holidays in Sydney, so it can prove useful to ask the Sydney Airport taxi driver about these before leaving. All taxis are legally obligated to accept credit cards. Sydney taxis for disabled passengers with wheelchairs, or other special taxi requirements, can be arranged at the Arrival Hall in the Sydney Airport's International Terminal T1.

 Pirate Sydney Airport Taxi Serivce

You will find it difficult to find pirate Sydney Airport taxis due to a AUD 5000 fine in place for touting activities, including hiring a taxi outside of the official pick-up points.

 Sydney Airport Taxi Scams

Fraudulent Manual Credit Card Swipe

A new scam emerged in Sydney in October 2013, in which the taxi driver says his electronic payment system is not working, but says he can process your charge on a manual machine. These credit card numbers are then fraudulently re-sold. Say no, and pay cash.

Wrong Tariff
Unless you catch a Sydney Airport taxi at night (between the hours of 22:00 and 05:00) the meter should be set to tariff 1 not 2 (which is the night tariff and 20% higher). Make sure to check the meter for a small external red light showing the tariff setting and confirm with the driver which tariff is in effect. Unfortunately some drivers have found ways to disable this light. This problem is more common for taxi from Sydney Airport rides taken from the international terminal.

Sharing the Ride
During peak hours, you may be asked to share a Sydney Airport taxi with a stranger that is heading to a similar destination. It is completely up to you if you wish to share. If you do, you should pay only 75% of the displayed metered fare (essentially getting a taxi ride for 25% off) or discuss with your sharing passenger on splitting the total meter cost.
