The airport is named to honour André Franco Montoro, a former Governor of São Paulo. GRU Airport is shared with the military. 


In 2012, Guarulhos Airport served 32,777,330 passengers, making it the busiest airport in the country. Airport upgrades currently underway are welcomed, as GRU has been ranked one of the world's worst in terms of delays.
