Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport

Where is Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport?

Sao Paulo is the world's 7th largest city, and it exerts strong influence regionally and internationally in commerce, finance, arts and entertainment. The city of hosts more than 90,000 events a year, from film and fashion, to business and sports.

The city of Sao Paulo is one of 12 FIFA World Cup 2014 host cities, for which Brazil is the host nation. Infrastructure projects currently underway in the city include the new Corinthians stadium (Arena Corinthians) and airport upgrades.

Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport (IATA: CGH, ICAO: SBSP), formerly Vila Congonhas Airport, also is located in the Congonhas neighborhood, in the district of Compo Belo, 8 kilometres (5 miles) from downtown Sao Paulo, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The airport is named both for it's neighborhood, and to honor Lucas Antonio Monteiro de Barros, the Viscount of Congonhas do Campo, the first president of the Province of Sao Paulo.

In 2012, Congonhas Airport served 16,775,770 passengers, making it the 3rd busiest airport in the country. Upgrades are currently underway.

Sao Paulo has two main airports, Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) handles most international flights, while Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport (CGH) handles domestic and regional flights (the tiny Sao Paulo Campo de Marte Airport serves light aircraft only). While some distance away, the Greater Sao Paulo region is also served by Campinas Viracopos International Airport (VCP), which is connected by rail, as well as by Sao Jose dos Campos Airport (SJK).

Tip: look around inside the central hall of the passenger terminal, considered one of the most outstanding examples of modern architecture in Sao Paulo, even though expansion projects have caused some loss of much of its former character.
