Chicago O`Hare Airport Taxi

Chicago O`Hare Airport taxi photo

You will have no problem hailing a cab at ORD Chicago O`Hare International Airport at which the designated taxi stands are right outside the baggage claim area.

There are no flat rates for taxis from the airport and you'll be charged the standard Chicago taxi rate of USD 2.25 for the first mile and USD 1.80 for each additional mile. An additional airport taxi fee of USD 2 is added to all fares.

Expect to spend about USD 35 to USD 40 for a cab from O'Hare to downtown Chicago. If you're going to a central location and would like to save money, taxi dispatchers on-site will help you arrange a shared ride.

Note that, unlike other cities, Chicago taxis can be of any colour and drivers are not required to wear uniforms. Partitions are mandated for all taxicabs, except independently owned and operated taxicabs.

Unofficial Chicago O`Hare Airport Taxi Service or Hire Points

Unofficial taxis may offer you a ride away from the offical taxi ranks.

IHateTaxis.com does not recommend the unofficial Chicago O`Hare Airport taxi service.

Use only official taxis from the taxi stands unless you want to risk being ripped off.

 Chicago O`Hare Airport Taxi Scams

The Slow Ride

A seemingly honest, smart looking taxi driver may approach you as you head to the taxi ranks, ask you if you need a taxi, and points to his taxi, complete with signage and light. The "friendly" driver will distract you on your slow ride into town, hoping you will be unaware of the meter. You will arrive at your destination (or almost: these cabs will drop you a little ways from your hotel) only to find the meter showing USD 85, about double the going rate.

The Student Scam

We're nicknaming it this, as it was a Chinese student, with little English, arriving in the USA to go to university, who was the victim. Arriving late at night, the vulnerable student is approached by a taxi driver who tells him that no more busses to his university are running that night. They negotiate a $1,000 fare for a ride that should cost about $300, maximum. But upon arrival, the driver demands $4,800, which the student does not have. What he does have is about $4,200, which he hands over. Read our blog post on the scam, and how to avoid touts.
