The airport is named to honour two leading anti-mafia judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were murdered by the mafia in 1992.

A 1.90-metre (6 ft 3 in) diameter plaque, featuring the portraits of the two leading anti-mafia judges murdered in 1992 and after who the airport was named, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, can be found to the right of one the main outside entrance to the departure hall.
