Puerto Vallarta Airport

Where is Puerto Vallarta Airport?

Puerto Vallarta is a charming and picturesque Mexican town and balneario (seaside resort) in the lush Jalisco region. Located on the Pacific Ocean, its bay is called Bahía de Banderas, one of the deepest and largest in the world, and is a paradise for snorkelers and scubadivers, sailors and sunseekers. An old fishing village, Puerto Vallarta has a charming old town (Zona Romantica), a fabulous boardwalk dotted with public art (the Malecon), and delightful little restaurants.

Puerto Vallarta International Airport (IATA: PVR, ICAO: MMPR) is the gateway to the thousands of Canadians and Americans who flock here each week in the winter to escape the cold. Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport is officially named after the former President, but is widely known as simply Puerto Vallarta Airport.

Sun seekers fly into Puerto Vallarta Airport from Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Chicago, Seattle, Vancouver and Calgary. Carriers include Alaska Airlines, Air Canada, Air Transat, Continental, Delta, Sunwing, United, US Airways, Virgin America and WetJet, to name a few. PVR Airport served 3,127,200 passengers in 2014.

Most tourists stay in the new town of Nuevo Vallarta, or one of the resort districts, though some do stay in Old Town Vallarta.

Even though the airport is fairly close to town, your transportation options are about the same for all areas. First, check to see if your resort offers a shuttle service (these are usually free). Otherwise the airport shuttle or a taxi are your best options here. Details are included in this guide.

Or, to truly arrive stress free, treat yourself to a private Puerto Vallarta Airport transfer from IHateTaxis.
