Budapest Airport is located 16 kilometres from the centre of Budapest and is easily accessible on public transport. There is a great deal to do in Budapest and, given the opportunity to explore, you should certainly take it!

Danube Tour

The Blue Danube was immortalised in a waltz by Johann Strauss II and if you are in Budapest you should definitely try to experience the real thing. The Danube Bend offers an excursion into Hungary’s history with a tour along the “Blue Danube” stopping in Visegrád to walk on the 750 year-old stones of the formal Royal Residence, Esztergom to visit the largest cathedral in Hungary and Szentendre where you can wander through the baroque settlement, built on medieval ruins and go up the narrow streets to the panorama point to see the Danube.

During the summer (between the 1st of May and the 30th of September) you return to Budapest on the Danube by boat and then the tour ends at the pier rather than in the city centre.

Budavári Labirintus

Located underneath the cobbled castle district of Budapest is a 1200 metre labarinth of tunnels and small caves. This subterranean network was used as a shelter during World War II and now houses a maze of quirky artworks including the Ivy Grotto in which a fountain covered in ivy srouts red wine instead of water. You can also watch short films about the area and at night you can explore the caves by the light of oil lamps.

Thermal Baths

Budapest is famous for its healthy thermal spas which draw crowds of tourists every year. If you are only in the city on a layover this would be an ideal relaxing activity to help you pass the time. There are many different bath houses to choose from all of which offer spa treatments as well as the healing power of the thermal baths. So if you are feeling a little tense after you flight and want to wind down before the next one, head into town to one of the spas for some real pampering and revitalising.

Shopping

Budapest has plenty to offer the avid shopper, from first class malls with the latest in international fashion brands and fine dining experiences to back street shopping and treasures and trinkets to take home and wow your friends and family at home. So head down to the centre of the city and you will find shopping experiences to suit your every need.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to BUD Budapest International Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
