Where is Almaty Airport?  

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital (Astana became the capital in 1997). Situated in a mountainous area in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau, Almaty sits at an elevation of 2,300–3,000 feet (700–900 metres).

Almaty remains the commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan, and is known for its aerial tramway, connecting downtown with the top of nearby Kök Töbe mountain (aka the "green hill"). The hilltop recreation area includes Almaty Tower, the city's television tower, amusement-park style rides, a restaurant and other tourist attractions.

Almaty International Airport (IATA: ALA, ICAO: UAAA), or simply Almaty Airport*, is located 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) northeast of Almaty, in Almaty Province, Kazakhstan.

In 2012, Almaty Airport served 4,003,004 passengers, and is the country's busiest international airport.
