The rules of the road are fairly simple around Anchorage and Alaska. Make sure that you stay on the right-hand side, wear your seatbelt and stick to the speed limits. Also, be sure to use child seats if necessary, which can be hired from most reputable car rental companies, both at the airport and within the city of Anchorage itself.

Many of Alaska's highways and two-lane roads connect a number of interesting settlements, often passing rivers and tall mountains along the way. Winter driving is especially scenic, although daylight hours are short and the roads can be extremely icy at times. Worth noting, most car rental agencies in Anchorage will not permit off-road driving. Within the city itself, many of the central streets are one-way only, which can make reaching your destination a little difficult at times.

A number of cheap parking lots and garages are located around downtown Anchorage. These include Diamond Park along K Street and the Anchorage Parking Authority on 6th Avenue. For those driving to Anchorage Airport and wishing to leave their car nearby, both the Airport Road Car Storage along the East International Airport Road, and Park and Fly off the West International Road, offer reasonable prices.
