Rathaus, Roland and the Brothers Grimm

Bremen's Rathaus (Town Hall) is one of the finest in Europe. A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, it is an important display of the the city's historical wealth and freedom. There are tours a few times a day. In the square, there are several important sights:

  • Dom St Petri (Cathedral of St Peter) has a huge towered façade that dominates the main square. Check out the fine painted details on the ceilings, and the treasury displays. Entrance is free. For EUR 1, you can climb the Southern Tower for great views over the whole city
  • The Roland statue on the main square is of the Knight Roland, a protector of trade. There are Roland statues in many European cities, and Bremen's is considered one of the finest. The statue itself is a designated World Heritage site.
  • The Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians of Bremen) statue is of the characters from the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale. Next to the Town Hall.

Blockland

For green fields and cows, visit "Blockland", located near the river Wümme, to the the west of the university. Here you can bike, inline skate or walk along the dyke. In summer, enjoy an ice cream from one of the farms. In winter, there is ice-skating on the river and small creeks.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the Bremen Airport in time for your connection and enjoy your layover city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
