Port of Durban Terminal Info & Guide

Port of Durban

Where is Port of Durban Terminal? The Port of Durban Terminal or Durban Port in Durban South Africa, is the second largest container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere, according to the AAPA World Port Rankings 2004, only overpassed by the Brazilian Port of Santos. The Durban Port also has a well-equipped passenger terminal at N- berth on the T-Jetty for the convenience of Durban cruises, which operate mostly between November and May.

Cruise ships make use of one or more berths as required and, at times, the Durban Port can have as many as three cruise ships in port together. An attractive Harbour Expo Market is mounted in the air-conditioned N-Shed while cruise ships are in port. Long-term plans foresee a new cruise terminal being built at A berth on the Point.

Durban has a long tradition as a port city. The Durban Port, which was formerly known as the Port Natal, is one of the few natural harbours between Port Elizabeth and Maputo, and is also located at the beginning of a particular weather phenomenon which can cause extremely violent seas. These two features made Durban South Africa an extremely busy port of call for ship repairs when the port was opened in the 1840s.
