ORF Norfolk Airport Info & Guide

Norfolk International Airport

Where is Norfolk Airport?

"The Navy is much more than a job; much more than service to country. It is a way of life. It gets in your blood." - Albert Pratt, Assistant Secretary of the USA Navy, 1955

Norfolk, Virginia has always been a Navy town, with a long history as a strategic military and transportation point in the United States. In fact, the world's largest naval base is located here, and NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has one of its two Strategic Command headquarters here. Bordered to the west by the Elizabeth River and to the north by the Chesapeake Bay, Norfolk is also a port city, with more bridges than you can imagine.

Norfolk is primarily served by the Norfolk International Airport (IATA: ORF, ICAO: KORF), located 5 kilometres (3 miles) northeast of the central business district of Norfolk. Along with Newport News Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), Norfolk Airport serves the entire Hampton Roads metropolitan area of southeast Virginia, as well as northeast North Carolina. Norfolk Airport is the closest airport to the Virginia Beach, the popular tourist destination. Other nearby cities are Chesapeake and Portsmouth.

Norfolk Airport served 3,193,388 passengers in 2011, a decent increase of over 4% after a couple of declining years. Southwest Airlines, US Airways, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are the predominant users of the airport. While designated as an international airport, all current 78 daily flights operating out of Norfolk Airport are domestic. ORF terminal improvements are currently underway.

In 2012, Spry Magazine named Norfolk Airport one of the 6 most fitness friendly airports in the U.S.A. due to its proximity to the adjacent and highly walkable Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Your best bets for Norfolk Airport transfers are a taxi or airport shuttle, as there is no train connection or public bus service. Renting a car here isn't for everyone, due to congestion and poor signage. If you are headed for Virginia Beach, there is a private bus service available.
