Although SUF Lamezia Terme Airport is located outside of the city centre, the train gets you into the city centre quickly and efficiently. There's a lot of history in the region, so take advantage of any extra time to see what you can.

Enjoy Fresh Fish

Lamezia Terme is located in Catanzaro, one of five provinces that make up the Calabria region in Southern Italy. The region is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea (“the toe of the boot”). As such, the sea is a big part of the region's culture and cuisine. For a short layover, head into town, find a restaurant full of locals and order up some fresh fish.

Go Exploring

Pristine beaches, stunning landscape, hillside towns, ancient Greek temples, Byzantine churches dot the countryside of Italy's best kept secret. Rent a car and see a slice that fits well with the time you have available, and take home rustic memories from a stunning landscape.

Grotta Azzurra

For a longer layover, make your way to the coast off Dino Island, is popular for its Grotta Azzurra (Blue Cave), where you can swim surrounded by fish in crystal blue water.

A word of caution: As one of the least developed areas in Western Europe, there is crime in the region. The high-profile crime that receives the most media attention, at least in Italy, concerns the Mafia, called in Calabria the 'Ndrangheta, but it almost never targets tourists. Road safety is a much greater concern than the Mafia for tourists visiting the region. The SS 106, which runs along the Ionian coast from Reggio Calabria to Taranto, is considered one of the deadliest roads in all of Europe.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to SUF Lamezia Terme Airport and clear security in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
