While the civil airport is named to honour Sicilian wine industrialist and automobile enthusiast Vincenzo Florio, the military airfield is named to honour Italian aviator Livio Bassi.

In 2013, Trapani Airport served 1,878,557 passengers, making it the third busiest airport in Sicily.
