Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport

Where is Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport?

BKK Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport, (IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS), also known as (New) Bangkok International Airport, is one of two international airports serving Bangkok, Thailand, the other being Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK). The Bangkok International Airport is located in Racha Thewa in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan Province, about 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of downtown Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi Airport opened in 2006 and inherited the airport code BKK from Don Mueang after Bangkok's older airport ceased international flights.

Suvarnabhumi is the sixth busiest airport in Asia, and the busiest in the country, having handled 47.9 million passengers in 2011. The Bangkok International Airport, however, was only designed to handle 45 million passengers per year, a number that is expected to reach 51 million in 2012. On March 16, 2012 the government of Thailand ordered all low-cost, chartered and non-connecting flights to relocate to Don Mueang Airport to help ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi Airport. AirAsia flights moved to DMK on October 2, 2012.

BKK Airport is the main hub for Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways and Orient Thai Airlines. Designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy / Jahn Architects, Suvarnabhumi (meaning Golden Land in Sanskrit) has the world's tallest control tower (132.2 m), and the world's fourth largest single-building airport terminal (563,000 m²).

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport was named by SKYTRAX as the 10th World’s Best Airport of 2012 by size of airport handling 30-50 million passengers annually. Also in 2012, Suvarnabhumi Airport ranked 1st of the World’s Halal Friendly Airports (equipped with Halal-friendly facilities for Muslim passengers) by the Concentrating Institute.

SAFETY CAUTION: In July 2013, a Bangkok taxi driver was arrested and charged in the killing of an American passenger over a fare dispute. At this point, few details are available, however IHateTaxis advises extreme caution when taking taxis in Bangkok. Under the circumstances, you may want to consider taking a private car for the greatest security. If you wish, you can book your private Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport transfer from IHateTaxis now, and arrive stress free.
