Jakarta International Airport

Where is Jakarta Airport?

Located on the northwest coast of Java, Jakarta is Indonesia's economic, political and cultural centre. Established in the 4th century, and home to multiple settlements, Jakarta has been the country's capital since independence was declared in 1945.

Jakarta is nicknamed "The Big Durian" (after the thorny foul-smelling fruit), as the city is considered Indonesia's equivalent of New York City (the Big Apple).

Jakarta International Airport (IATA: CGK, ICAO: WIII), officially Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, also referred to as Jakarta Soekarno Hatta Airport, Jakarta Soekarno Airport, Jakarta Hatta Airport, Tangerang Airport, Cengkareng Airport, or simply Jakarta Airport, is located in Tangerang (Cengkareng), 20 kilometres west of Jakarta, on the island of Java, Indonesia. The airport is named to honour Indonesia's the first President, Soekarno, and first vice-president, Hatta. While the airport is sometimes referred to as SHIA airport, this not an official airport code.

In 2012, Jakarta Airport served 57,772,762 passengers. To relieve overcrowding, in January 2014, some of Jakarta's domestic traffic began moving to East Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP), however only one airline ultimately moved.

Airlines that fly to Jakarta Airport include AirAsia, Air China, Air France, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Cebu Pacific, China Airlines, EgyptAir, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Saudia, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.

Cities with flights to Jakarta Airport include Abu Dhabi, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Beijing, Cairo, Colombo, Doha, Dubai, Frankfurt, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Jeddah, Kuala Lumpur, Kunming, London, Manila, Melbourne, Osaka, Paris, Perth, Phuket, Riyadh, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Tokyo.

Your best bet for a Jakarta Airport transfer is a taxi. Details on all options are included in this guide (new Jakarta airport train coming in 2016/2017).

To avoid scams, if you use the Visa on Arrival (VoA) service, have the exact cash payment ready (currently USD 25), to avoid claims of no change. You can pay by credit card, but this may not always be available. Ignore any requests for any additional fees. Sometimes immigration officers may ask for a bribe to provide you with a visa; avoid paying this bribe, as you'll have to pay another one while leaving the country.

Beware of any involvement with baggage porters, as most are talented scammers, intent on cheating and misleading passengers. If you do need help, porters should be paid a minimum of IDR 20,000 to carry bags. Better yet, travel light or find a trolley and deal with it yourself.
