Medieval Altstadt (the old city)

Lübeck's old city is remarkable and rather unique. The largely intact medieval city, called Altstadt (old city), is. UNESCO World Heritage site. The old city is strategically located on an island, surrounded by rivers. Lübeck's streets are a delight for connoisseurs of architecture, offering a huge variety of architectural styles from different periods. Bear in mind that Lübeck's Altstadt is not an open-air museum but a living city centre, so don't expect a complete medieval site. You'll find many beautiful old buildings intertwined with modern ones and a modern infrastructure. A particularly well-preserved 13th c. part of the Altstadt is the Koberg area at the island's northern end. And don't miss the Gänge, small streets off the bigger roads, with small houses and a peculiar atmosphere.

Take a bus or boat to Travemünde

Lübeck is a port city, so why not take in the sea? You can take a bus, or go for a boat ride, to reach Travemünde, a seaside resort with views of the Baltic Sea. While a bus is fastest, a journey by boat is much more satisfying as you can take in the scenery.

See the Marzipan Museum

Marzipan, the most famous export from Lübeck, can be found throughout the city. Cafe Niederegger is popular, and has many locations. The flagship store is part shop and part museum. Here you can learn the history of the sweet, see how it is made, and admire  the marzipan sculptures.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the Lubeck Blankensee Airport in time for your connection and enjoy your layover city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
