Fares on Caltrain to San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Jose are on a zonal basis, and tickets must be bought before boarding the train. To Redwood City and Burlingame USD 3.25, San Bruno USD 5.25, South San Francisco USD 5.25, San Francisco USD 5.25. Menlo Park USD 5.25, Santa Clara USD 7.25 and San Jose USD 7.25. Day passes are available. Tickets cannot be bought on the train.

AirTrain is the free San Francisco Airport transfer monorail system which connects all the SFO Airport terminals with the BART, West Field Road Cargo Facility, Long Term Car Parking and the Car Rental Center. There are two AirTrain lines which run 24 hours a day, the RED line which connects the different terminals in a loop, and the BLUE line which runs round all terminals and to the SFO car rental center. AirTrain has stops at Concourses A, B, D (currently closed), F and G. Both lines also stop at car parking garages A and G. The BART station is at garage G.

 

Caltrain:


Caltrain to San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Jose - trains run from nearby Millbrae BART station to San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Jose. To get to the Caltrain station from the SFO airport, take the BART train from the International terminal to Millbrae (5 minutes), with the fare being USD 4.25, and change platforms there. The Caltrain station in San Francisco is not conveniently located for the city centre, being at 4th/Townsend. It is best reached by taxi (from Union Square in 10 minutes and the fare is USD 6-7) or by bus (Buses 15, 30 or 45 from Union Square).

Fare from the San Francisco Airport to downtown, and all over the Bay Area, on the BART train is USD 8.65. Buy your tickets from a machine in the station.

 

SFO to San Francisco Plus Transfer: arriving SFO Airport passengers can pre-purchase a combo BART/transit return trip voucher online prior to arrival in San Francisco. This voucher can be redeemed for one round trip transfer ticket from SFO to one of these downtown San Francisco stations: Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery and Embarcadero (last San Francisco stop). Most downtown hotels are located within easy walking distance from one of these stations. The USD 19.25 ticket includes enough fare to take an additional, one-way ride to or from any BART station within San Francisco. This voucher can only be redeemed from 08:30 - 22:30 daily. To redeem your BART ticket, go to the SFO/BART Information Booth, located in the SFO Airport Terminal G at the bottom of the Airtrain escalator. The booth is just a few steps away from the BART station entrance. Vouchers Cannot Be Redeemed inside the BART Station. To buy your voucher, use SFO to San Francisco Plus Transfer online purchase tool (map of BART stations and hotels also located here). You can print your voucher at home.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a metro train/subway system which runs all over the San Francisco Bay area. There is a BART train station at the San Francisco Airport in the International terminal, G concourse. The most useful station for downtown San Francisco (city center) is Powell Station. The train from SFO takes about 30 minutes. 

 

BART Train provides service all over the Bay Area. The train leaves the airport heading for Dublin/Pleasanton Monday-Friday every 15 minutes 04:07-23:46. Saturdays every 20 minutes 05:56-23:46. Sundays every 20 minutes 07:56-23:46. The last train leaving from the airport for Millbrae leaves at about 01:00. Travel times to Downtown San Francisco/Powell Station is approximately 30 minutes, Coliseum/Oakland Airport 55 minutes and to Dublin/Pleasanton 1 hour 15 minutes.

 

Tip: to take BART to Oakland Airport, make your way to the BART Coliseum Station (you will need to change trains to get there), then take the BART OAK Connector (separate fare). For details, see the Oakland Airport train page    .
