Official Regina Airport Taxi Recommendations

IHateTaxis.com has a mixed recommendation on the official Regina Airport taxi service.

With the taxi shortage, it's hard to give taxis a thumbs up. But, let's be honest, this is really your only choice unless you pre-book a limo or rent a car. You may be waiting awhile, but eventually a taxi will come.

Official Regina Airport Taxi Details

The Regina Airport taxi shortage is severe. One quarter of passengers use taxis to leave from the airport. Those on flights arriving at peak hours have a 24% chance of waiting 30 minutes or more for a taxi. Late arriving flights in the winter months reportedly have line-ups of up to 40 passengers and waits of over an hour. A recent survey indicated that 29% of passengers who used taxis are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. Among those who have experienced waits repeatedly, there is a depth of feeling and embarrassment for their city.

Passengers leaving the Regina Airport will exit the terminal doors near the luggage area. As they exit they will see the taxi stand on their left, a space on the curb where taxis are supposed to wait. Waiting taxis will be from either Capital Cabs or Regina / Premiere Cabs

There are courtesy phones located near the terminal exit as well. The stand is marked by a small movable sign for passengers, plus permanent signage and pavement markings directed towards the street to mark the zone as exclusively for taxis.

In response to the taxi wait times, the airport has arranged for Taxi Coordinators to manage the taxi queue during peak periods.

Passengers may still arrange their own pick-up by anyone they choose, but the vehicles waiting for them (limousine, or other taxi company) must wait in a separate area away from the taxi stand at the main exit. There is no restriction going to the airport. Passengers may take any taxi or limousine company they prefer. Some of the larger hotels have taxi stands located in front of them. These are usually held exclusively by one of the Regina companies.

 Regina Airport Taxi Scams

Forced Sharing and Double the Price

Sometimes the lack of taxis may force you to share one with a stranger and the taxi cab driver may try charge both passengers as separate fares so clarify the rate upon your departure with the airport. If you have to share with a stranger, at the very least there should be some cost saving.

Another reported scam is where you hand the taxi driver your credit card and the driver will fill in the base fare AND the tip amount before handing it back to you to sign.

Yet another recent scam is that of the driver taking the passenger on the long route to/from the airport, thus making the ride unnecessarily more expensive than normal.
