Victoria Driving Information

Driving is on the right side of the road.

All Victoria Airport rental cars are automatic transmission.

Your local drivers' licence is required.

An International Drivers' Permit (or IDP) may be required, especially if your local drivers' licence is in a language other than the local language (you may inquire when you pick up your car).

Victoria Driving Stress Level: 2/10

To get to the Pat Bay Highway (#17) to town, you'll have to negotiate a few roundabouts. These are confusing, so take your time and realize that locals have problems with these too!

Rules of the road for roundabouts:

  • When entering, yield to traffic already in the roundabout
  • Drive around until you reach your desired exit
  • Signal when preparing to exit.
  • If you miss your exit, don't worry: just go around again

Victoria has non-aggressive and slow drivers. The highway into town is littered with traffic lights, meaning that you will rarely reach the speed limit. The left lane does not move any faster than the right lane on the highway either. Welcome to Victoria!

If you decide to explore Vancouver Island, drive with care. While the Malahat Drive (a section of the highway between Victoria and Duncan) is scenic, it is also dangerous, with more than its fair share of fatalities. Reduce the risk by driving in daylight, using designated pull-outs for gawking (otherwise, keep your eyes on the road!), avoid driving in poor weather, and adhere to posted signs and speed limits.

Victoria Airport Car Rental Recommendations

IHateTaxis.com has a mixed recommendation on a Victoria Airport car rental

If this is your first visit to Victoria, and you will be staying downtown, you probably won't need a car, as there is good public transportation to the popular tourist attractions. If you want to explore beyond the usual sights, or would enjoy some seaside drives, then a Victoria Airport rental car is a good choice. Alternatively if you are staying in downtown Victoria, you can arrange for a downtown Victoria rental car to pick up later in your trip.
