John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA: JFK, ICAO: KJFK, FAA LID: JFK), also referred to as JFK International Airport, New York JFK Airport, New York Kennedy Airport, or simply JFK Airport, is located in Queens County, about 19 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Manhattan, New York City, in New York state, United States. The airport is named to honour John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.
JFK Airport is the top international air passenger gateway to the United States. JFK is one of only two airports in North America with scheduled flights to all 6 inhabited continents; the other is Canada's Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ).
JFK Airport is the base of operations for JetBlue Airways and is also a major international gateway hub for Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Ninety airlines operate out of JFK.
The JFK Airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also manages the two other major airports in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, La Guardia (LGA) and Newark Airport (EWR), in addition to three smaller airports, Stewart International Airport, Teterboro Airport and the Downtown Manhattan Heliport. The airports in the Port of New York and New Jersey combine to create the largest airport system in the United States, second in the world in terms of passenger traffic, and first in the world in terms of total flight operations.
In 2011, JFK Airport handled just over 47.8 million passengers, LaGuardia Airport handled just over 24.0 million, and Newark 33.8 million. In total over 106 million passengers used New York airports in 2011. JFK is the 6th busiest airport in the United States.
