Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport

Where is Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport?

A grand 300 year old church, next to a modern steel-and-glass building, a communist style building: this is commonplace in Bucharest. Once known as "The Little Paris," Bucharest has been undergoing an aggresive modernization.

Yet, in the old centre, you can still find cobblestone streets, streetsigns for old guilds and ruins of medieval courts. With shops, restaurants and clubs thrown in, it's an interesting mix of old and new, all part of a trendy, sophisticated sensibility you'd expect from a historic European capital.

Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport (IATA: OTP, ICAO: LROP), or Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport, is officially named affter the Romanian aviator. Bucharest Airport was previously named Bucharest Otopeni Airport, after the town where it is situated, so that's the name locals still use today. The airport is northwest of the city of Bucharest, Romania. The airport is also used by the Romanian Air Force.

OTP is currently the only commercial airport serving Bucharest. Bucharest Baneasa / Aurel Vlaicu Airport (BBU), converted to a general aviation airport in March 2012, and remains closed to commercial traffic. Plans are underway to build a new Bucharest South International Airport, funded and anchored by Blue-Air, Romania's largest low-cost airline.

The 76th busiest airport in Europe in 2011, Bucharest Airport served 5,049,443 passengers. Since the closure of BBU, however, traffic is up about 45%. It's good timing that a new domestic terminal was opened at OTP in October 2012.

Romania's national airline, TAROM, is headquartered at the airport, as is Țiriac Air. In addition, Air Bucharest, Blue Air and Wizz Air all currently base their operations at OTP.

Other airlines serving Bucharest Airport include Air France, Alitalia, Austrian, British, Carpatair, Lufthansa,  Niki, Pegasus and Turkish.

Destinations include Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Munich, Paris, Rome and Vienna.

Services at Bucharest Airport include:

  • Shops
  • Hairdresser and barber
  • Pharmacy
  • Post office

IHateTaxis has heard reports of Bucharest Airport concessions (restaurants, cafes and shops) being extremely expensive, with prices as much as double prices found in the city. By all means, pick up essentials, but otherwise avoid this Bucharest Airport scam.

The one exception the supermarket on the lower floor, which has reasonable prices, and is a good place for a snack.
