Official Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport Taxi Recommendations

IHateTaxis.com does not recommend the official Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport taxi service.

There are cheaper alternatives to the taxi, even if you manage to get an honest driver. As that's not likely - taxi scams are a common crime in Bucharest - think twice before putting yourself at the mercy of an unknown driver.

Confirm the rate before getting in (look for it it written on the doors).

Check to be sure that the meter is turned on: insist on it. Bucharest taxis are meant to use meters, although expect some discussion about this with the driver.

Note: Traffic in central Bucharest city centre can be very bad, with big traffic jams (fridays are worst), so allow lots of time when you return to the Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport.

The best way to get a Bucharest taxi with the standard rate is to walk to the Departures Hall and grab a taxi right as it's dropping someone off.

Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport Taxi Scams

Bucharest is famous for taxi scams, and the airport is worst of all. we suggest you avoid taking a taxi from Bucharest Airportif you can.

Common tricks are:

  • You are offered a flat fare, below the normal rate, let's say RON 20 - only to be told, once the car is moving, that the rate is per kilometre (RON 20/km!)
  • You are quoted an average flat rate, let's say RON 50 - but upon arrival 'taxes' are added for another RON 50, and if you ask for a receipt, it's another RON 50 (so RON 150!)
  • You are driven to some remote location - to pay up if you still want to be taken to your destination
  • As the taxi sets off from the airport, another man jumps in the car -  along with the driver, this man threatens you to give him your monay out of your money
  • TIP: Should you find yourself in a situation like this (doors are locked, the car is moving, your bags are in the trunk), your only safe way out is to bargain (it's OK to yell) - you might be able to get away with RON 120 with the driver, but it could cost you RON 200 or more

Even seemingly friendly, official taxi drivers will likely try to get some extra money out of you, especially if you don't speak the language, lack confidence or appear clueless.

Taxi scams are one of the most common crimes in Bucharest, so think twice before delivering yourself to the mercy of an unknown driver.
